Setting Up Your Wordpress Blog

August 16th, 2007 · No Comments

So, in addition to the readings for Tuesday, you need to set up your blog. Please make sure that you do this by Sunday evening and email the link (url) of your blog. Here is a step by step guide courtsey of Jenn.

1. Go to wordpress.com

2. Click on “Sign up” or “Start your wordpress blog”

3. Choose a username. Please note that this username will become part of the URL for your blog. For example, if your username is ilikecannedmeat, than the url would be www.ilikecannedmeat.wordpress.com. In other words choose something that isn’t overly complex, is easy to remember, and is a little bit unique and/or “catchy.”

4. Enter email address; check yes to “the terms of service;” and choose “gimme a blog!”and click “Next”

5. On the next screen, create a title for your blog and click Signup.

6. You should now see a screen that says “Your Account is now active.” Click on the “homepage” link.

7. Login; click on the “login” on the right-hand side of your screen (under “meta”). This will take you to what is called your “Dashboard”–this is the place from which you control your blog–writing posts, making edits, changing the look of your blog, etc. (If you ever have trouble logging into your blog just type in your blog url and add “/wp-login.php” to the end).

8. Click on “Presentation” and then choose a theme. This is what your blog will look like.

9. You now have a blog, and I need the URL or blog address. Again, this should look like www.username.wordpress.com. Your blog address appears at the top of browser screen in the Address or URL line. Please copy this address and email it to me (by Sunday night).

For a brief tour of/tutorial on your new wordpress blog, click here (note: some of the options in this video are slightly different than what you will see, but it is roughly the same)

10. If you want update your about page, this is under Manage - -> Pages, then click on edit (you don’t have to do this).
