Setting Up Google Reader

August 21st, 2007 · 2 Comments

The first step is to get yourself a get yourself a google account (as Brandon points out as long as you have gmail you’re good).

If you already have a google account, you can go straight to Google Reader.

Once you login to Google Reader you should see a page that looks something like this:

You can watch the video if you want (its short).

Now click on the add subscriptions button, and add in http://www.outsidethetext.com/trace/feed/ and http://digg.com/rss/index.xml . You can delete the digg one later, but this one is updated constantly so you can make sure you have the reader set-up correctly.

You can add in more subscriptions if you want, but we will spend time on this in class on Thursday. For now just make sure you have done at least the two above.

You might want to take a look at google’s visual quick start as it will familiarize you with the reader.

And for advanced tricks on google reader check out this post.

On safari I can bookmark feeds and it alerts me when there are new posts and shows me the entry title and first few lines. Do I still need a google reader set up?

    Jehu:
Yes please still get google reader, for several reasons. First, I want everybody in the class to be using the same technology, at least at first. Two, is that while Safari is good, there are limitations as you will hopefully come to see. In the end ultimately you can choose what works best for you, but for now try a dedicated feed reader.
