Plato & Saussure

Update: We now have a classroom for this coming Tuesday. It is CBW 1.106.

Read Plato’s Phaedrus and Saussure’s Course on General Linguistics. Note: For Plato you only need to read Phaedrus, the whole book is over 400 pages long, but the relevant dialogue begins on page 396-459. Read the entire dialogue, but especially focus on the sections when the conversation turns to the nature of writing.

Second, set up the blog you will use for this class. Personally, I recommend using WordPress. Once your blog is set up, you need to write a post that connects the argument of the reading to some contemporary issue in social media. Be sure to provide links to the object/article on social media about which you write. Once you have it set up, leave a comment below with the url to your blog. Note: Put the url in the body of the comment, not just the line that says URL.

If you need help on the technical side of writing a post, this video should help.

Also consider joining Twitter and following @therefore, @academicdave, & @emacutd. (You could also leave your twitter ID in the comment section below so your classmates can find you.)

Oh and I recommend getting someone to read Plato outloud with you. I’ve found that it’s much more fun spoken than trying to read it by yourself.
