For next class read at least the Introduction and Part 1 of Benkler’s The Wealth of Networks.

Tuesday will mark a shift away from focusing on the technological structures of media to the effects that media have on our notion of “public” and “publicness.” Begin by reading Part 1 of The German Ideology . Next read Stuart Hall on “Encoding/Decoding” which is available on eReserve.

Thursday we will discuss, Linked, read the whole book—it’s a good read—and leave your comments below. (Also remember that you should submit a working draft of your final project this week sometime.)

Read danah boyd’s Dissertation. We will be focusing on chapters 4-6, but you might want to begin by reading the first chapter to get a sense of the project. Leave your comments below.
