Leave your thoughts regarding Clay Shirky’s book below. Given the ease of access to this book (compared to say Heidegger and Derrida) I would like to have more of a discussion about this reading. So, come to class prepared to offer up not only what Shirky’s analysis is, but your take on what he offers, i.e. what are the costs and the benefits of the change he sees? And what does Shirky miss? How might we complicate his analysis?

Reminder: Don’t forget to bring an initial draft of your final paper.

In addition to working on your midterm you should read Weinberger’s Everything is Miscellaneous. For those of you who Twitter the author can be found here. Focus on the first two chapters, and the final one as they are the most important, but you should read the whole book.

Note: We will also be meeting next week in the Mobile Lab (next to my office) as the conference room is being used at that time.

Beginning The Network

This Thursday we will move more explicitly to talking about Network Theory and reading texts that directly address what they see to be as the key changes brought about by networked knowledge. First up is Manuel Castells The Network Society. Read Chapters 1, 15, 16, & 19. You might want to look at a few other chapters depending on what subject matters interest you.
