Next class we will be discussing two central debates that at least in part shape how nearly every problem/issue/discussion takes place on the internet.

The first is what is the nature of the human and the nature of the human in relation to technology. For this read The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy‘s entry on “Social Contract Theory.” Read carefully the parts on Rousseau, Hobbes, and Locke, you can scan the remainder of the piece. Also read Culture and Technology Chapters 3,4,8 & 9. (If you don’t know the password ask one of your classmates who took notes during class when I told you.)

Second read a pair of articles that discuss the technical formation of the internet. Start by reading the appendix to Blown to Bits and then read “The Spread of TCP/IP and the Political Origins of the Internet.”

After you are done make sure you contribute to the class wiki.

Group B is responsible for editing last weeks entries.

Group C is responsible for editing the page for this weeks class (the readings above).

Group A has off this week.
