Read: For Wednesday read The Printing Revolution in Early Modern Europe. You do not need to read the entire book, although I will be talking about the whole book. Read the Introduction, Part 1, and the Afterword.

Write: Each group member should individually write a 500 word post to the group blog about the reading. Focus on only ONE aspect of the book, not the work in its entirety. Post this by Tuesday at 7:00pm.

Group Project: Set up the group blog and email me the URL. Also you probably want to get started on the? research, looking for the material you will want the class to read.

For Wednesday’s (January 25th) class we will be talking about three articles that help explain how we think of the medium of print and broadcast media.

-“The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”-Walter Benjamin
-“What is an Author” -Michel Foucault
-“The Medium is the Message” -Marshall McLuhan

Also remember to email me (from an email you want to use for this class), include in that email:

-Make the Subject Line EMAC 6361
-Your name
-Your preferred topic (three choices, list in order)
-Skill Set (what skills would you bring to a group? writing? research? web design? etc.)
-Your Twitter Handle

Do this by Friday, so that I can assign groups and get back to everyone.

On October 4th we will be talking about two works. Don’t be fooled by their respective short lengths, each is difficult so leave yourself enough time. Read them in the order I have listed below.

Group A should compile the new notes.

Group B is off.

Group C edits the notes from two weeks ago (McLuhan, etc.)

The Creation of the Media

Next class we will be talking about Paul Starr’s The Creation of the Media. We are going to divide the book into parts so you do not have to read the entire thing.

First start by reading the Introduction.

Group A Read Part 1 "The Opening of the Public Sphere"

Group C Read Part 2 "The Rise of Technological Networks"

Group B Read Part 3 "The Making of the Modern Media."

Each group should contirbute to the class wiki page for their respective sections. Group C will also cover the introduction.

Note: Group C is also going to be responsible for editing last weeks page on Plato, Ong, McLuhan. This is not do until two weeks from now, but in case you want to work on it in the interm . . .
